1-800-DENTIST launches nationwide smile makeover contest

As an advocate of regular dental care, 1-800-DENTIST® understands that many people can't afford the dentistry they need. That's why the nation's leading free resource for consumers in search of a dentist has launched a nationwide $30,000 smile makeover contest called "My Smile Bites." To enter, contestants must upload a personal video showing what's wrong with their smile, explaining how these problems affect their lives. Video submissions will be accepted through November 10, 2009 noon PST.

The public may vote for their favorite contestant videos from November 10, 2009 through December 1, 2009 noon PST. 1-800-DENTIST® will choose five potential finalists based on several criteria, including the clinical feasibility and complexity of each case. 1-800-DENTIST® will announce the winner on or about December 15, 2009. The winner's cosmetic dentistry journey will be captured on film.

"We want to show the world how dentistry can dramatically change a person's life," said Fred Joyal, CEO and Co-Founder of 1-800-DENTIST®. "No matter who wins, it will be a truly inspirational experience to see a person's smile and life transformed before America's eyes."

Contestants should consider the following:

-- Video entries should be 2 minutes or less -- Video should clearly show the contestant's smile, including teeth -- Contestants should describe problem areas -- Contestants should explain how their smile makes them feel and how it affects their lives -- Contestants should show their personality and compel the public to vote for them

Sample videos may be viewed at 1800dentist.com/sample-videos.

This exclusive dentistry contest gives hope to consumers who can't afford the cost of regular dental care, much less cosmetic dentistry. Only legal residents of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia who are 18 years of age or older are eligible to enter. Void where prohibited. Other restrictions may apply. For complete contest rules, visit http://www.1800dentist.com/contest-rules.

I am in so much problems with my dental needs. I would love to have your make over. Presently, I need $15,000 to complete the work that was already started and had to be put on hold. I would make a very good spokes person for your services and i would greatly appreciate all the help you could give me. Imagine me being a spokes person for you and your services. It would be like a walking billboard.
Please, please, I do need some help and I don't have a clue or know how to handle this. I would really be worth it to use as a demonstrator model for your product and the work that can be accomplished. I do look forward to hearing from you. Thanks

This would be a dream come true. I have always taken care of my teeth until I lost my insurance and my teeth have sufferd. I am also Diabetic and can barely afford my serious meds and not even all of them I lost a tooth at the end of my smile and can't wear my plate due to a gag reflex. I also lost a few back teeth due to an alcoholic Dentidt in high school that left me in fear of Pain and Dentists. I would love this makeover and would never stop smiling. What better advertising is there. So all there is to say now is" pick me. pick me ooh,... ooh... pick me...Thank you,  Sincerely,  Cynthia Carroll Pueblo Colorado ..... pick me."

In 1999 I had optical decompression surgery which left me blind in the right eye.  Subsequent surgeries damage the trigeminal nerve and I now deal with facial and upper jaw pain along with headaches.  I have come to terms with everything.  I am deathly afraid of dentists therefore I have lost a few teeth and the ones that remain are not very good.  To feel good about yourself is not vain, it sets the tone for even the most smallest things you do or encounter in your life.  To be pain free and have a beautiful smile would be very uplifting.  I always smile with my mouth closed and I would love to show off something beautiful.  Thank you, Nina K.

I'm an unemployed 81 yrs man who is now just surviving on Social Securty and I need work done so I can eat again instead of searching for soft food to eat. I'd like to eat a steak again so I can remember what it tastes like.

  5. Brian Walker Brian Walker United States says:

I am on social security disability . I have had bad teeth since birth. When I had most of my teeth I had no problem smiling and socializing with people because I had a million dollar smile. I now have 3 whole teeth in my mouth and 6 broken ones, also my medical will not cover my dental. I also get severe infections in my mouth. I have tried many places that could possibly get me dentures and struck out at everyone. I would love to be able to smile and eat whatever I want, especially at my wedding I would like to have teeth.I would really like you to consider me as someone to help. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely, Brian Walker New Haven Indiana

I would love to to have my mom be considered for the smile makeover. She has dentures on the top that do not fit, so  she has to use LOTSSSSSSSSS of denture adhesive that is gross. Her bottom teeth  she only has a few of them that are her own, the rest are fake ,that also do not fit. Thank GOD she has a job but NO funds extra to get new teeth. She works with the public and would love to  have her  smile back from ear to ear but...... would love to get her a smile that match's her personality. Every time to see the show where they do makeovers on a persons teeth I always wish it was a gift I could get for her. So thought what the heck why not try. Selah, Washington mom needs to smile.. Sincerely

I wish I could send a pic of my teeth. My computer isn't new enough to do that. But I can comment on my horrific smile. All my front teeth are broken off. Back teeth broken below the gumline. Have abcesses every two months. Can't chew half the foods I'm suppose to be eating. Pain gets so unbearable that I have to go to the emergency room for help, or relief I should say. This has caused great bouts of depression, embarassment so overwelming that I can't even apply for employment that I also need desperately. I'm tired of being in pain and really need help!

  8. donald erwin donald erwin United States says:

My teeth have been going bad for a while now and I have been having to pull any that were loose all on my own. I had an appointmet and was given a quote of around $8,000 to fix all that is wrong. I am the only working adult in my house so $8,000 is a lot of money it would take years to get that for me .. I have been in a lot of pain latley and it is not just cosmetic for me the pain is sometimes unbareable. I can't eat a lot of things for the loose teeth or the bad ones. I dont smile in photos and I dont look people in the eye when talking due to my teeth. I sometimes have to do side jobs just to get the bills paid so for me to ever get the money to fix my teeth is impossible. So me fixing my teeth is not just for me to look better but  most certainly for me to no longer be in pain. thank you Donald Erwin

  9. Steven Mcreynolds Steven Mcreynolds United States says:

He has helped everyone in our family in every way, kind and gentle heart that never asks for nothing in return. Several years ago he started looseing his teeth, first his front tooth. Then while shopping for Halloween masks one year, I got him to try on a mask .Didn't like it and I went to pull it off his head and out came the other front tooth. Hes 55 works every day but has no insurance, he pulls his own teeth when they get loose. I would love to surpise him with this contest that he won and came now have his smile put back. Even if they were false teeth he needs it bad, they would look better then No teeth. We tried to get him into a denist office but the cost is way out of range. So he says once he has pulled them all out , then all he will need is false ones. Can you help!!!!

  10. dorian koloian dorian koloian United States says:

Hello my name is Dorian and I met someone twelve years ago this month. She is a beautiful person inside and out. In the beginning she wouldn't talk much and I thought it was because she didnt speak any english. she is from brazil and back then she only spoke portuguese. well years later we are still friends. she is more like family to me now, and now i know why she never talked. unfortunately she didnt want anyone to notice her teeth. when i found out about her teeth i brought her to my dentist. they have been doing deeep cleanings to try to sustain them so that she could save up enough money to have the work done, but she would never be able to afford it. she is so sad because she doesnt want to lose all of her teeth and end up with a mouth full of nothing. i have witnessed first hand the pain she has gone through with tooth aches and infections and let me tell you i dont know how she gets through it. she has gum disease, missing her front teeth, missing some other teeth, her gum has receded in the front making her bottom teeth look so long, which by the way are very loose. but the worst part about it is im scared if she dosent get the work done and some new teeth soon she will end up with heart problems and possibly heart disease. i need to tell you a little bit about her. she is 44 years old, has raised one child as a single parent. when she came to this country she went to school to learn english (she speaks english fluently now), she continued her education with patient care, she cleans houses for a living, and has only missed two days of work in the past twelve years. she has inspired me to be a better person in many ways, and i would do anything for her. but the one thing she needs most is money and a very good dentist that is not afraid of a challenge. unfortunately i am not a dentist and i dont have any money. thank you p.s. her name is laura vieira

  11. Jana Duff Jana Duff United States says:

Hi, my name is Jana and I am married to the most wonderful man in the world  and his name is Ronald. We are both ministers in the small town of Liberty, Texas. Our purpose in life is ultimately to positively touch the lives of others in anyway possible. We give to others in anyway we can and I would now like to ask "You" to help my husband with his smile, self-esteem and confidence. My husband has got the gift of singing, speaking, and really just the gift of "gab". He is a blessing to our family and rarely asks anything of anyone. My husband and I have been married for 13 years and have three children, one in which passed away of S.I.D.S. in 1997. My husband has suffered from a gum disease for all of our life together, and although we have insurance, we still cannot afford the dental intervention that he really needs. The Bible tells us to, "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord..", and I believe with a new smile my husband can reach out to others in a greater way and he can truly make the noise he was meant to make. I thank you for your efforts to help others and I know that if you change my husbands life you will greatly change many other lives in the process.

Please consider me for this contest.  I have no money for myself.  I am biting the insides of my cheeks from my teeth shifting.  I have had dental work since I was a toddler and my first dentist told my mother that I had an asidic metabolism and drilled fillings in all but my 4 front.   He did nothing about the UPSIDE DOWN tooth in the front of my face which makes me look like a lopsided vampire. This was in the 60's.  I would like to smile more for my customers but can't because of yellow teeth and missing teeth.   I am VERY afraid that this is affecting my whole body health.  My teeth are loose and I can barely chew any food.   I need to keep my job but am afraid of loseing it because of my smile.   Can anyone out there help?   Please?

Hello for years while I had insurance I had the dentist from hell use my insurance to pad their pockets and destroy my smile (one put in a filling that fell out twice in two weeks). I just cracked my front tooth and I do not have any insurance now (try teaching Sunday school like that), my mouth really needs a dental SWAT team! Thank you for your consideration in this matter, Sherry.

In the early 1980's TMJ Jaw Therapy as it was the most technologically advanced treatment recommended.  Media claimed it was the fix all of any jaw or teeth problem someone could have.  Due to circumstances I was unable to continue tmj therapy.  Since then my two upper front and four lower front have pulled inward on their own making my bite uneven andbreaks up my smile.  That makes me uncomfortable enough not to smile anymore.  Sorry I cannot do a video for you I don't know how.

  20. Sharon Cotton Sharon Cotton United States says:

Hello, I would love the world to see the real me. I am fun, confident, generous, love to cook and I love to tell jokes. For my entire life I have held my hands over my mouth, when talking, laughing and definetly when crying. I truely wish I could just laugh out loud and not fear the stares of how terrible my teeth really look. You see Ive had diabetes since I was a small child, I had a kidney transplant and many other health problems. Overcoming and still surviving these traumas in my life has not nearly been as difficult as hiding my smile from day to day. I believe to this day, that my smile in spite of my fun and jovial personality and my qualifications has cost me employment and some of life's securities. Sometimes people interpret you as unfriendly or unclean because your smile is crooked, teeth broken, discolored and just plain unsightly.  I'm a very happy person with a really bad smile. I would love to speak about my past and show off the new me. Most dentist don't even want to bother (I've been told to just get dentures) Others, explain the expenses. And I know I could never afford that type of cost. (quotes from 10K +) The medications I take with help from Medicare cost over $2,700 per month. Perhaps one day I can give my Doc's who saved me a well deserved smile. and gracious humble thank you. Is there a dentist anywhere, who truely understands and could help me.  "Thanks for listening....smiling on the inside." Sharon in Lorain, Ohio.

    • Thomas Thomas Hungary says:

Dear Lorain, Have you ever considered going abroad for your dental treatment? I organize dental travel to Budapest, Hungary. Over here you will find prices from USD 350 for a full porcelain crown or from USD 315 for a PFM crown. Of course you have to factor in the air fare and stay here, but it only takes a need for a few crowns before the savings will more than cover your travel costs. 6 full porcelain crowns will cost you from USD 2100 depending on who you pick for your dental treatment.

  21. angelica angelica United States says:

  22. dassie dassie United States says:

I'm writing for my daughter who missed the entry date before this contest by three days. Her teeth are in three rows on the bottom and the top 2 teeth have a very, very wide gap and are also protruding.

She knows she needs it and wants it badly but feels her education should come first. Will you have this contest next year? I hope so for she is a beautiful 21 year old who believes that the inside is more important than the outside and I agree, but if the outside can be fixed...

  23. Dorothy Gibbs/Fayetteville, NC Dorothy Gibbs/Fayetteville, NC United States says:

I too missed the deadline of you contest. I have alwys had a beautiful smile and been told so by many. Lately my smile has literally fallen apart. I used to talk with my smile and now I just try to cover it as best I can. I have missing teeth...rotted teeth...imbedded teeth from my mis-care and I would be eternally grateful for a second chance. I love talking to people and spreading joy, but I can't be me when I constantly am wondering what the person across me is thinking of such a now bad looking mouth.

  24. Joy Joy United States says:

I'm praying for a miracle, need upper arch, have no insurance. I am 49. married raised three beautiful children. and it time for me. for a dental make over, it will make a dream come true.  so I can smile and be happy again. and then i will help all those in need. thank for caring...my smile is everything to me. it will make all the diffence.  "A new Joy"

  25. CHAR BETTS CHAR BETTS United States says:

I have limited funds for implants and dentures.  There are about
8 embedded teeth that will have to be removed.  I probably only
have about 2 teeth above and 3 below.  Since I am 70 years old
and still work ( presently unemployed until I can get my teeth fixed).

I do receptionist work and need to have a nice smile. Does Medicaid
help with dental work?  I have dental insurance with Delta, but it
really doesn't pay but $1,000 per year and that would probably only
cover my extractions.  Should I look for a dentist in Mexico or
    Costa Rico?

  26. Sandra Sandra Canada says:

I am probable not the most needing person, but my smile is gone just the same... I have broken and chipped teeth, I only have seven teeth on the bottom. I'm not able to chew my food with my bottom teeth so I've had to use my front, and this has put to much wear on them so they have chipped and brook. Also there is so little enamel left from trying to whiten them and because of age the color is just embarrassing, I try to cover my teeth with my lip, and my children keep saying "mom its not that bad" but they just don't understand. I just recently got divorced and because of this smile of mine will never let anyone else get close. I know it sounds so vain, but it is just me... I feel better just sharing my plait. Thank you for listening...

I am in desperate need of getting my teeth fixed. I am a young mom who is of 25 years of age and I've been suffering with tooth aches and not being able to eat much. I was scared of dentists since I was 15 when she hurt me doing a checkup causing my gums to Lee. 33. Kimberly Buckles Kimberly Buckles United States says:

Hi,my name is Kimberly Buckles and I am 51 years old. I am a  mother of 3 and a grand mother of 5 boys. I love being a grand mother , but they all call me Mah Maw instead of grandma. any ways my grand kids bring me so much joy and happiness I can't help but smile when they are around , I love them sooo much . But I'm so embarrassed and ashamed of my smile that I catch myself holding back from smiling a lot lately .  I have a lot of teeth missing on the sides and in the back both on top and bottom , its hard to eat a lot of food that's not soft, and if I do I have to be very careful so I don't get them hurting. I lost a tooth that is in the front on the bottom due to an accident years ago and when I smile you can't help but see that empty  space where a tooth is suppose to be. I never realized how big of a space one tooth filled until I lost that one ,it feels like the size of a football field to me. And my teeth seem to get bigger gaps between my teeth with each passing day.
I am also the kind of person that is always positive and I always have time for my friends when they need me. I'm the friend they come to when they need someone to cheer them up or when they need advice or just need someone to listen , I'm the one they come to. I believe a smile can make a  big difference in someones day, it can turn a bad day into a great day. I also believe smiling is healthy for your soul .
I would be one of the happiest people in the world to win a contest such as this , and would not  be able to thank you  enough .  I find it hard to be that person my friends and family are used to having there for them, because I don't want anyone seeing my teeth, and it would mean the world to me to be able to smile at my grand kids with a healthy beautiful   smile.  Thank you for this opportunity to win a dream come true.
Today is Christmas eve ,so Merry Christmas everyone and have a blessed year. And if I'm not the lucky winner , congratulations to who ever the lucky winner turns out to be. Good Luck everyone.
