A retrospective analysis of 1,234 Americans indicated a substantial underdiagnosis of obesity when Body Mass Index (BMI) was used compared to the Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) scan.  

Endocrine Intervention in Surgical Patients with Diabetes Leads to Shorter Hospital Stays, Reduced Costs

New research released today indicates that endocrine intervention in surgical patients with diabetes and dysglycemia (abnormal blood sugar) accounted for shorter hospital stays and a decrease in the expense of treating these patients.

New Data Questions Whether Diabetes Is Really "Cured" by Gastric Bypass Surgery

A new case study cautioned against promoting gastric bypass surgery as a "cure" for diabetes at the AACE 19th Annual Meeting & Clinical Congress in Boston today. The study cited that normal hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) and fasting blood glucose (FBG) were insufficient criteria for such a determination.

American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists to Focus on POEMs in Clinical Practice Guideline Development

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) today released the Protocol for Standardized Production of Clinical Practice Guidelines – 2010 Update. This protocol is designed to ensure that all subsequent clinical practice guidelines meet not only Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) standards, but also incorporate subjective factors that can improve patient outcomes.  This protocol is an update of the first AACE guidelines for guidelines, published in 2004. In total, AACE has published 17 Clinical Practice Guidelines, nine of those have been published since 2004. Guidelines currently under development, which will adhere to the new protocol, will address hypothyroidism, osteoporosis, and acromegaly.
