GlowCaps receives 2010 Medical Design Excellence Award for innovative design

Vitality, Inc., developer of GlowCaps, Internet-connected pill bottle caps, announced today that GlowCaps has received a 2010 Medical Design Excellence Award, for innovative product design.

“We designed the GlowCap to encourage medication taking behavior, not reinvent the pill-taking experience. Because intelligence and connectivity are embedded in each GlowCap, we can personalize adherence programs and all people see is a delightfully designed bottle cap.”

The intelligent pill caps use light and sound, which can be followed by timely phone calls or text messages to remind people to adhere to any prescription regimen. Each time the pill bottle is opened, adherence data is securely relayed to Vitality over AT&T's cellular network. This daily adherence data is used to automatically refill prescriptions as pills deplete. In addition, progress reports are sent to patients, caregivers and family members. Using sophisticated pattern recognition, Vitality determines the unique motivators for each person. For example, some are more motivated by financial incentives and other by connecting with caregivers.

"We are honored that GlowCaps were recognized with a prestigious Medical Design Excellence Award," said CEO of Vitality David Rose. "We designed the GlowCap to encourage medication taking behavior, not reinvent the pill-taking experience. Because intelligence and connectivity are embedded in each GlowCap, we can personalize adherence programs and all people see is a delightfully designed bottle cap."

The Medical Design Excellence Awards Competition (www.MDEAwards.com) is organized and presented by Canon Communications LLC. Entries are evaluated on the basis of their design and engineering features, including innovative use of materials, user-related functions that improve healthcare delivery and change traditional medical attitudes or practices, features that provide enhanced benefits to the patient, and the ability of the product development team to overcome design and engineering challenges so that the product meets its clinical objectives.

The 2010 Medical Design Excellence Award winners will be honored at a presentation ceremony on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 in New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, in conjunction with the Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East Conference and Exposition (www.MDMEast.com), June 8-10, 2010. Gold and silver award recipients will be announced at this time.
