Programme on surgical and medical treatment strategies for cancer

The 5th ESU Master class on medical treatment for urological cancer is organised by the European School of Urology (ESU) on 25-27 June 2010 at the Barcel- Hotel Sants in Barcelona, Spain. The anniversary master class is a prime venue to scrutinise current practices and survey the latest therapies that are still being tried or tested in various medical disciplines involved in cancer therapy. It is open to different medical specialists.

The format consists of three modules. Module 1 is entitled 'Hormonal and intravesical treatment and chemoprevention', module 2 'Immunotherapy and targeted therapies' and module 3 'Systemic cytotoxic chemotherapy and palliation'.

Each module comprises short state-of-the-art lectures followed by debates, case reports and interactive discussions.

This year too, an online pre-assessment is included in the programme. Professor Hein van Poppel (Leuven, BE), ESU course director: "The pre-assessment is meant to determine the level of a participant's knowledge before the start of the Master class. It is held online and consists of 20 multiple choice questions. The faculty will review the results and adjust the content of their lectures accordingly".

A post-assessment takes place after the last lecture and consists of 100 multiple choice questions to test the participant's knowledge on the topics taught during the ESU Master class.

This teaching programme has been developed by close collaboration between the European Association of Urology (EAU), the European School of Urology (ESU) and the European Board of Urology (EBU).

Professor Ziya Kirkali (Izmir, TR), ESU course director: "We aim to provide a comprehensive update for urologists, but the Master class is open to other specialists, such as medical oncologists and radiotherapists. There is a significant gain in knowledge by viewing the same issues from different perspectives. With rapid advances in cancer research, the oncologically oriented urologist requires insights into the clinical applicability and impact of the latest range of surgical and medical treatment strategies. We would like to encourage all interested specialists to register now".

All participants receive a certificate acknowledging their participation. The entire programme, including the assessments, is accredited with 9 European Urology-Accredited Continued Medical Education (EU-ACME, ;) points.
