In the latest issue of National Psychologist, a major publication for practicing psychologists, FinancialPsychologyCeus.com's CEO and Founder Joe Lowrance, Psy.D., discusses how money is increasingly emerging as a psychotherapy topic. In an article, entitled Once Taboo Topic Now Critical Therapy Issue, Dr. Lowrance points out that mounting research and clinical literature connect financial psychology with a number of mental health concerns.
“Long a taboo subject of conversation in our culture, money has been an issue often avoided by both client and psychologist”
"Long a taboo subject of conversation in our culture, money has been an issue often avoided by both client and psychologist," writes Dr. Lowrance. "Our current recessionary times have brought financial matters to the fore in the lives of the general public and our clients as well.... As a result psychologists are increasingly equipping themselves to address their clients' money struggles."
In the article, Dr. Lowrance explains the important role parents and caregivers play in the development of a child's financial psychology and how money-related stress impacts relationships. "Money issues predict divorce more so than any other type of disagreement," adds Dr. Lowrance.
Once Taboo Topic Now Critical Therapy Issue is available in print and on the National Psychologist website.
