'It's fun living now'

186 pounds ago, John Borgstrom of Roseville, Minnesota was just plain…tired. All the time. "I was missing out on so much. No energy. No walking. No sports. Cutting the grass was tough. I'd have to rest, take a nap afterward. Just lethargic all the time." Not that the feelings were new to him. He was 64 and, "I'd been heavy since I was a child. I'd gain weight, then I'd lose weight, then I'd gain weight."

His physician had placed him on blood pressure medication, and he knew he had to "do something for face diabetes."

Linda, John's wife of 39 years, knew it, too. "I saw him going downhill because of his weight and was concerned about 'what's next?'"

So she took action. Gently. But action, nonetheless. "We had investigated Medifast online, so I decided to visit the Roseville Weight Loss Center. I met with them, liked them, and told John about it. Then I set the material on the table and just left it there. About a week later, I said was going back to learn more about it, and asked if he wanted to come along. He said yes."

"At first," John recalls, "I was apprehensive. But I was satisfied, and joined on the spot."

In the first week, he lost 13 pounds. "After that, the losing becomes contagious," he says. "You want to go back every week to see how you're doing. The more you lose, the more you want to lose. Even when I reached my weight loss goal of 130 pounds, I wanted to keep going."

John had tried dieting on his own more times than he can count. "But I was always hungry. I'm never hungry on Medifast."

Linda says, "Eating to lose weight sounded so foreign." John agrees. "It was hard to think about eating so often. And I had to learn to cook, to prepare the right kind of food. Now I eat vegetables and turkey and chicken and tuna fish… I never liked vegetables, but now I miss them when I don't have them. Linda would say, 'You're missing vegetables? Who are you?'"

And how has being 186 pounds lighter changed John's life?

"First off, I'm totally off my blood pressure medication. No pills. When I go to get dressed I think the clothes are too small, but I put them on…and they fit. Also, I get asked two or three times a day about weight loss. I see people haven't seen in a long time and they say. 'What happened to you?' I say, 'Medifast.'

"We can go out without worrying if I'll fit into the seats…at the movies, for example. I don't have to be dropped off at the door anymore. We even got to see the Twins' new ballpark without wondering where I'd sit.

"The one-on-one support at Medifast is the most important thing. I think of them as family now."

Linda has a much better vision of the future now. "We're pushing toward retirement…and now we'll be able to travel. To go see our kids."

John was aware of it, too. "Our future wasn't very bright before, and I realized that."

Linda says, "I'm so proud of him."

John smiles. "It's fun living now."
