Stony Brook Medicine's Neurosciences Institute brings together leaders in the field of neurosciences to present the latest advances in research and clinical care for neurodegenerative disorders, neuropsychiatric disorders, and neuro-ophthalmology. The "Meeting of the Minds" Symposium will be held at the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University on November 9, 2012.
The symposium is designed for physicians, researchers, students, and other healthcare professionals with a special interest in the field of neurosciences. Continuing Medical Education credits are earned by participating physicians and nurses.
The keynote speaker is Helen S. Mayberg, MD, Professor, Psychiatry, Neurology and Radiology, Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Mayberg will present "Rethinking Depression and its Treatment: Insights from Studies of Deep Brain Stimulation."
Dr.Mayberg recently appeared on CNN discussing "Treating depression with electrodes inside the brain."Other Meeting of the Minds Symposium highlights include presentations by Stony Brook University Neurosciences Institute faculty. These interactive sessions include: "Neurosurgery in Sub-Saharan Africa: Tanzania Neurosurgery Project," by Robert Galler, MD, DO; "Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS): Past, Present, Future," by Nurcan Gursoy, MD, PhD; and "Alzheimer's Disease: A Protein Folding Disorder," by William Van Nostrand, PhD.
