The 32nd Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Pain Society will convene May 8-11 at the New Orleans Convention Center. APS is the leading multidisciplinary professional organization in the United States dedicated to advancing pain-related research, education, treatment and team-oriented professional practice.
More than 1,000 scientists and clinicians specializing in pain and pain management are expected to attend. Plenary, panel and poster sessions will cover a wide range of topics on diagnosis, treatment and management of acute and chronic pain conditions. Pain research also is a major focus of the meeting. The nation's leading pain researchers will present their discoveries in the scientific sessions.
This year's keynote speaker is Story Landis, Ph.D., director, National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. In her address, Dr. Landis will cover the future of pain research and highlight significant advances in pain research as well as the challenges facing researchers and funding agencies in setting priorities in times of fiscal uncertainty.
Pain and aging is the topic of another plenary session address, which will be given by geriatric pain researcher Keela Heer, Ph.D., R.N. Dr. Herr will assess ways the U.S. health care system can provide quality pain care to the burgeoning older adult population and relate a research agenda to improve recognition and evaluation of pain in all older adults.
Panel symposia during the conference will include sessions on pain management for wounded armed service personnel, treatment of co-occurring pain and substance use disorder and herbal marijuana for treating pain.
