Record number of abstracts submitted to Heart Failure 2015

A record number of abstracts have been submitted to the world's leading heart failure congress, promising more original science than ever before.

Heart Failure 2015 is the main annual meeting of the Heart Failure Association (HFA) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and will be held 23 to 26 May in Seville, Spain, at the Sevilla Palacio de Congresos.

Professor Frank Ruschitzka, scientific chairperson of the congress and HFA president elect, said: "Heart Failure is considered by the worldwide scientific community as the meeting to attend in the field. We have the most original science and the greatest number of attendees, with nearly 1,600 abstracts submitted and 4 500 delegates due to arrive from 70 countries. Journalists should register now for this top notch event."

Late breaking trials promise to be the scientific highlight for the press. In three sessions, breakthroughs in clinical heart failure research will be presented from international trials, meta-analyses and registries including:

  • TITRATE
  • STOP-HF

  • QUALIFY

  • TASTE-IPD collaboration

During four days and 100 scientific sessions international experts will present the latest news on heart failure under the theme "Heart Failure taking centre stage: Drugs, devices and multidisciplinary care".

Professor Ruschitzka said: "Heart failure is on the move and there are new therapies on the way. Reporters will hear novel trial results in drugs and devices that hold promise to change the treatment landscape. Advances in ventricular assist devices will be discussed along with developments in cardiac resynchronisation therapy and novel valvular interventions to improve outcomes in our heart failure patients. Updates from recently published trials in chronic heart failure will be given, particularly in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction."

He added: "We will dig into potential mechanisms for the drug LCZ696 which showed huge benefit on top of standard therapy in the PARADIGM-HF trial. Journalists will also gather fresh results from further analysis of the trial data."

The second World Congress on Acute Heart Failure is part of the main programme again this year. This is the place for the media to get up to speed on current controversies, take a glimpse at therapies on the horizon and hear up to the minute trial results in acute heart failure.

Two honorary lectures will be launched this year. Cardiology legend Professor Eugene Braunwald will give the inaugural Eugene Braunwald lecture and Professor Henry Dargie will present the first Philip Poole-Wilson lecture.

Another first this year is HF - Insuficiencia Cardiaca 2015, a joint venture with the Spanish Heart Failure and Heart Transplant Working Group of the Spanish Society of Cardiology, aimed at local and international Spanish speakers working in heart failure. Four sessions are planned in Spanish, and the track is completed with four sessions in English organised with international partners, the Argentine Society of Cardiology and the Brazilian Society of Cardiology

Dr José Ramón González Juanatey, president of the Spanish Society of Cardiology, will give a lecture on the difficult topic of anticoagulation issues in atrial fibrillation and heart failure.

Heart Failure 2015 is the premier international forum for professionals interested in heart failure including cardiologists, emergency room physicians, intensivists, internists, cardiac nurses, general physicians, basic scientists and epidemiologists.

Professor Ruschitzka said: "This year's congress looks set to be the best ever and reporters should save the date to ensure they don't miss out."
