VoxelCloud raises $8M for expanding scope of AI-based medical image analysis services

VoxelCloud, a startup focusing on medical artificial intelligence, has raised $8M in series A financing led by Sequoia Capital. The startup utilizes artificial intelligence and cloud-computing technologies to provide automated medical image analysis and clinical decision support for medical practitioners.

The Los Angeles, CA-based company plans to use its Series A funding for expanding its scope of medical image analysis services, establishing further collaboration with leading medical institutions in China and in the US, as well as regulatory filings and marketing.

Founded in 2015, VoxelCloud aims to provide accurate, accessible, and personalized medical image analysis by building medical image knowledge graph based on medical semantics and multiple artificial intelligence models. The knowledge graph will be offered in the form of an API to developers, allowing them to focus on building solutions for specific clinical applications without having to develop the basic algorithms and collect massive amount of anonymized training data from scratch. Further extension of the project will leverage heterogeneous data sources in synergy with the existing imaging data.

Currently, the company has developed products covering lung cancer, retinal diseases, coronary heart disease and liver disease.

“VoxelCloud applies the latest of AI technology to deliver highly optimized clinical workflows and empower physicians to make informed clinical decisions,” said Xiaowei Ding, Co-Founder and CEO of VoxelCloud. “It is also crucial to recognize the current limitations of AI and properly define its role in today’s clinics. We will continue our vision of delivering viable solutions that combine cutting-edge algorithms, state-of-the-art engineering, and robust medical context in an optimal way, and offer tangible value to providers, patients, and developers.”

The founders of the startup come from the leading research institutions and universities, all experienced scientists in medical image analysis and machine learning. In September 2016, the startup raised $5.5 M in angel investment.

“We have long believed in the vast potential of artificial intelligence in medicine,” said a representative from Sequoia Capital. “Our partnership with VoxelCloud is also driven by this vision. We are excited to witness this innovation and be part of it through our investment in VoxelCloud.”
