    If the solution is placed in an area with high turnover of the Cerebrospinal fluid, this may increase or decrease the effectiveness of the treatment.  If this is taken into account, then it would be worthwhile to note if the rat population with effective treatment had more or less stress than the group that was not able to survive.  Sounds like this is close to success.
