  1. Jenny Chambers Jenny Chambers United Kingdom says:

A  little disappointing to read that ICP (intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy) is apparently ' characterized by jaundice but intense itching is also present, and high alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels in the blood'.

Less than 10% of women with ICP will be jaundiced. ALP is raised in pregnancy in the third trimester and can also be raised in ICP so this enzyme should not be used to diagnose ICP - it's bile acids and (but not, or,) alanine transaminase. Itch may also be very mild. See here for further details http://www.icpsupport.org/abouticp.shtml Jenny, Chambers CEO, ICP Support; also Imperial College London and King's College, London.
