A disturbing but all too real trend in feeding habits that I see regularly in my dietetic clinic. For a child to be properly nourished there simply is no room for so-called junk or treat foods in kids aged 5 and under. Zero room. Sounds harsh but if the Nutrient Reference Values are to be satisfied, then this is the reality. To serve any 'junk' is not a treat but a mis-treat of a child. Kids are dependent on their parents' food and drink decisions and so exposure to good quality foods.  If those decisions are faulty at weaning in a land laden with great nourishing food ... I'm sure you can finish the sentence. To help parents make easier and yet wiser decisions, I published a book called "this=that child size: a life-size photo guide to kids' food serves". It is being launched this month! I am an Accredited Practising Dietitian in Australia.
