    As a patient in the Joslin Medalist study (those having survived 50+ years with T1D), I take issue with the claim that diabetes increases the risk of Alzheimer's. Of the 850+ T1D patients studied in the Joslin study, only 3 showed signs of Alzheimer's or dementia, after 50+ years of diabetes! These weren't mice, but people! They think it is related to the fact that we not only don't produce insulin, but we also don't make C-peptide, another factor in Alzheimer's. By the way, of the 30+ pancreases they have had donated by study participants who have passed, all had Beta cells. They were NOT destroyed, just not functioning anymore.
