    Peroxynitrites nitrate the NMDA receptor.  This results in the influx of calcium which results in the production of more peroxynitrites and the death of brain cells.  

    Eugenol by scavenging peroxynitrites and reversing part of its nitrative damage inhibts the influx of calcium and inhibits cell death.

    Eugenol is found in a variety of essential oils such as rosemary, clove, nutmeg, lemon balm, star anise, basil, bay laurel, and cinnamon leaf.  Aromatherapy provides an effective treatment for Alzheimer's disease particularly in the absence of cognitively debilitating drugs and if a proper balance between stimulating and relaxing oils is found.

    This strategy based largely on the same mechanistic hypothesis held by Lipton and his group offers a variety of advantages, not the least of which is it is currently available, cheap, and effective.
