    I think it was a mistake for the mNRA vaccines to target the spike protein.  The fact that it plays an important role in infecting the host cells isn't what's important.  Any part of the virus could be targeted, such as the N Terminal Domain, or any other part. This is what how the traditional vaccines work, using deactivated virus.  As a result, the spike protein has mutated and is no longer an area that can be targeted by new vaccines.
