Study: 80% of U.S. physicians use Herceptin for HER2-positive metastatic gastric cancer treatment

In just over a month following the FDA's October 2010 approval of Roche's Herceptin for HER2-positive metastatic gastric cancer, more than 80 percent of U.S. physicians report using the drug, according to new research by GfK HealthCare.

Queen's University scientists partner to treat premature baby blindness with stem cells

Scientists from the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences at Queen's University Belfast are teaming up to develop a cure to an illness that can lead to blindness in premature babies, thanks to funding from children's charity Action Medical Research.

African-American children have poor lung function at their initial visit to asthma specialist

African-American children are more likely to report previous emergency room visits, hospitalizations and need for intensive care unit management for asthma than Caucasian children on their first visit to an asthma specialist, according to a study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University.

Researchers lay foundation for future lung cancer detection test

Scientists working with Professor Dr. Joachim L. Schultze have identified over 480 molecules whose concentration in the blood changes when a person develops lung cancer. These molecules are present in the blood cells either in increased or decreased quantities. "In lung cancer patients, typical patterns which can be detected with a measuring program thus emerge", explains Prof. Schultze.

Pfizer Inc. announced today that its New Drug Application for crizotinib, an oral first-in-class anaplastic lymphoma kinase inhibitor, has been accepted for filing and granted Priority Review status by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and has been filed with the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

Inhalation of hydrogen can reduce hyperoxic lung injury

Inhaling small amounts of hydrogen in addition to concentrated oxygen may help stem the damage to lung tissue that can occur when critically ill patients are given oxygen for long periods of time, according to a rat model study conducted by researchers in Pittsburgh. The study also found hydrogen initiates activation of heme-oxygenase (HO-1), an enzyme that protects lung cells.

Boston Scientific Corporation today announced long-term safety data from the Research in Severe Asthma (RISA) Trial, which demonstrated the maintenance of stable lung function and the absence of clinical complications over a five-year period in patients with severe refractory asthma treated with its Alair Bronchial Thermoplasty System.

Although so-called clot-busting drugs are commonly used in the treatment of some patients with blood clots in the lungs, a new study conducted by researchers in Spain and the U.S. indicates the agents do not appear to be any more effective than traditional blood thinners for the majority of these patients.
