Hasbro Children's Hospital joins Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network

The emergency medicine department at Hasbro Children's Hospital has received a grant that will support its participation in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN). This is the nation's first federally funded pediatric research network focused on the prevention and management of acute illnesses and injuries in children of all ages.

MSTAR Program fosters interest in geriatric medicine and research

"This year marks the first year that the oldest members of the Baby Boomer generation turns 65. This milestone is an indication of the upcoming increase of older adults in the American population, and accompanying it will be an increase in their complex medical needs. UM educator named RWJF Nurse Faculty Scholar

Rosa Gonzalez-Guarda, Ph.D., R.N., an assistant professor at the University of Miami, School of Nursing & Health Studies, has won a competitive grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to develop, manualize, and test an intervention for preventing teen dating violence among Hispanics. Gonzalez-Guarda is one of just 12 nurse educators from around the country to receive the three-year $350,000 Nurse Faculty Scholar award this year.

ATA announces five recipients of 2011 thyroid cancer research grants

The American Thyroid Association (ATA) announced the five recipients of its 2011 research grants, each of whom will receive up to $25,000 annually for up to two years. Three of the five recipients were awarded special ATA ThyCa grants for research projects that focus on thyroid cancer. These grants are funded by ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors, Inc.

Ohio Third Frontier grants to advance Philips Healthcare Global Advanced Imaging Innovation Center

The Ohio Third Frontier Commission has awarded $2.5 million in research grants to advance the Philips Healthcare Global Advanced Imaging Innovation Center, a collaboration among Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals (UH) Case Medical Center and Philips Healthcare. The research projects are part of $30 million in funding awarded throughout the State of Ohio this week by the Ohio Third Frontier Commission.

Physical, sexual abuse and threats prevent adolescent girls from having their partner use condoms

Partner abuse leads to HIV infection, and black women are most at risk. A new study at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing has found that 46 percent of African-American adolescent girls report that their partner did not use a condom the last time they had sex -- often because of partner abuse. The girls described physical and sexual abuse and threats as preventing them from having their partner use condoms.
