Dicerna Pharmaceuticals, Ipsen announce collaboration in DsiRNA research and peptide engineering

Dicerna Pharmaceuticals, Inc., (Dicerna) a second generation RNA interference (RNAi) company, and Ipsen, a global biotechnology specialty care group, announced today that the two companies have entered into an exclusive research collaboration agreement to leverage their expertise in Dicer Substrate siRNA (DsiRNA) research and peptide engineering. The companies will develop novel conjugates of Dicerna's DsiRNA molecules and Ipsen's peptide targeting vectors in the therapeutic areas of oncology and endocrinology.

Intellikine, Tragara Pharmaceuticals awarded $1M each for developing new multiple myeloma therapies

The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) today announced that two San Diego area biotech firms, Intellikine and Tragara Pharmaceuticals, Inc. will receive funding via its MMRF Biotech Investment Award program. The MMRF Biotech Investment Awards represent a multi-year research grant commitment to fund the early-stage drug development of novel compounds and approaches that show potential in treating multiple myeloma. Based on the companies' achievement of clearly defined milestones, the MMRF will commit a total of $1,000,000 to each company by the end of 2011.

An average of one in 100 children in the United States has an autism spectrum disorder according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Celerion, a privately owned contract research organization (CRO), has completed the acquisition of the development and regulatory services consultancy and early stage development operations of MDS Pharma Services. The acquired assets include five clinical research facilities and two bioanalytical laboratories located in Lincoln, Nebraska; Neptune, New Jersey; Phoenix, Arizona; Zurich, Switzerland; and Belfast, Northern Ireland, as well as operations in Richmond, Virginia and Quebec, Canada.

Research explores association between BP and psychopathological symptoms

A paper published in the current issue of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics addresses the relationship of body piercing with psychopathology. The term 'body piercing' refers to the 'insertion of jewellery and other objects into artificially made openings in body parts', while body modifications encompass BP and tattoos. Recent research has explored the association between BP and psychopathological symptoms with unclear results.

DNA evidence often overwhelms jurors to convict wrongly says research

According to new reports from The Australian Institute of Criminology Research jurors are often not confident enough in their knowledge of DNA based evidence and this may often go against the accused as they may return with the guilty verdict. This is known as “the white coat syndrome” meaning laymen are often overwhelmed by the presence of an expert and as jurors may place more importance to these DNA evidence than necessary.

FT and GGT enzymes can be promising targets for treatment of lung cancer

A research team at the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, has shown in a study that two closely related enzymes could be targets for the treatment of lung cancer. The discovery was made when the researchers blocked the production of the two enzymes in transgenic mice. This resulted in inhibition of cell growth, fewer tumours and greater survival among the mice.

In a new research our worst fears are confirmed – fatty, fried and fattening foods are addictive. The addiction with these delicious ‘yummies’ may be as potent as that with cocaine or heroin. The study was conducted on experimental animals, rats in this case. When fed with fatty foods in great quantities these rats showed a compulsive need to eat.

Bioethical issues and professionalism analyzed through two medical dramas

A medical student and faculty directors from the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics analyzed depictions of bioethical issues and professionalism over a full season of two popular medical dramas-"Grey's Anatomy" and "House, M.D."-and found that the shows were "rife" with ethical dilemmas and actions that often ran afoul of professional codes of conduct.
