UTSA to implement Click Commerce eResearch Portal software

51st ASH meeting to feature 16 abstracts of MMRC

The Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium (MMRC) announced today that data from 13 of its clinical trials and three from the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) Genomics Initiative, which analyzes tissue samples from the MMRC tissue bank, have been selected for oral or poster presentations at the upcoming 51st Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) to be held in New Orleans from December 5-8, 2009.

JDRF partners with the Canadian Government in diabetes research

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Canada is pleased to announce its first partnership with the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency of Southern Ontario. Through this innovative two-year partnership, the Government of Canada is committing $20 million and JDRF is making a matching contribution of $10 million to accelerate world-class diabetes research in Southern Ontario by implementing a clinical trial network for diabetes research.

Potential therapeutic strategy to improve cognition in Down syndrome identified: DSRTF

The Down Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation (DSRTF) announces the identification of a new potential therapeutic strategy to address cognitive decline and improve cognition in Down syndrome. The findings were published in Science Translational Medicine on November 18, 2009 by DSRTF-supported researchers, Drs. Ahmad Salehi, William Mobley, and colleagues at Stanford and UCSD Schools of Medicine.

CPRIT’s cancer research funding awards: 403 proposals still in contention

The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) announced today that 403 of the nearly 900 proposals submitted are still in contention for CPRIT’s inaugural cancer research funding awards. The applications for the Individual Investigator Research Award and the High Impact/High Risk Research Award will now undergo a second, more intense peer review evaluation by seven committees over the next six weeks beginning the end of this month.

Direct link between insulin and core body temperature discovered

A team led by scientists at The Scripps Research Institute have discovered a direct link between insulin-a hormone long associated with metabolism and metabolic disorders such as diabetes-and core body temperature. While much research has been conducted on insulin since its discovery in the 1920s, this is the first time the hormone has been connected to the fundamental process of temperature regulation.

Real-life particles released by car brake pads can harm lung cells in vitro. Researchers writing in BioMed Central's open access journal Particle and Fibre Toxicology found that heavy braking, as in an emergency stop, caused the most damage, but normal breaking and even close proximity to a disengaged brake resulted in potentially dangerous cellular stress.

Color of skin impacts health, say researchers

Researchers from the universities of Bristol and St. Andrews in the UK have found that the color of a person's skin affects how healthy and therefore attractive they appear, and have found that diet may be crucial to achieving the most desirable complexion. The work will be published in the December issue of Springer's International Journal of Primatology.

Effect of niacin or ezetimibe added to chronic statin therapy on carotid intima media thickness: Study

Cheerleading injuries in the U.S.: 60% occur due to stunts

Whether rallying the crowd at a sporting event or participating in competition, cheerleading can be both fun and physically demanding. Although integral to cheerleading routines, performing stunts can lead to injury. Stunt-related injuries accounted for more than half (60 percent) of U.S. cheerleading injuries from June 2006 through June 2007, according to a new study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

ContextVision, SharpView, MGH and CMIV announce a collaborative study on advanced 3D image filtering

A collaborative study between ContextVision AB, SharpView AB, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization (CMIV) was announced today. The study will investigate advanced 3D image filtering as a means of increasing patient throughput and improving image quality in MRI and further enabling dose reduction in CT. Researchers will compare state-of-the-art 3D techniques with 2D filters.
