US Navy submariners banned from smoking

Smoking has now been banned from submarines too says the US Navy. They plan to stock nicotine patches and gums on board to help the sailors quit the habit. This new policy will go into effect before December 31st this year, announced Vice Admiral. John J. Donnelly, commander of the Navy’s submarine forces on Thursday.

Dating and hooking up: Benefits and risks

As hooking up takes over from dating as a means of heterosexual interaction on university campuses, more women than men continue to prefer dating whereas more men than women rate hooking up above dating. Both genders however perceive similar benefits and risks to dating and hooking up. Carolyn Bradshaw from James Madison University in Virginia, US, and colleagues explored the reasons that motivate college men and women to hook up or to date, as well as the perceived relative benefits and costs of the two practices.

Medical community and MPs react to deaths caused by inept foreign doctors

German doctor Daniel Ubani accidentally killed patient David Gray on his first UK shift as an out-of-hours locum GP. The death of the man aged 70 occurred from an overdose of diamorphine administered by Ubani whose poor English skills are being blamed. This has lead to a strong reaction from the local medical community and the MPs.

16 kg Kava seized: an Aboriginal elder arrested in connection

16 kilograms of Kava was seized by the Northern Territory Police as they arrested a well respected 56-year-old Aboriginal elder in connection. He will appear in court this May. Police from Ramingining in Arnhem Land stopped a Toyota Landcruiser at Barge Landing Road on Good Friday. The haul included 16 kg of Kava and small amounts of Cannabis. A police spokewoman revealed on Monday, "The Kava had a street value of $16,000 and was headed for Milingimbi Island before it was intercepted by police."
