UNAIDS India has launched a new website on HIV/AIDS in India

As the XV International AIDS Conference currently on in Bangkok brings global attention on the HIV/AIDS epidemic, UNAIDS India has launched a new website on HIV/AIDS in India.

One of the five core functions of UNAIDS is to provide strategic information to guide efforts against AIDS. Hence, in playing its role as a facilitator, UNAIDS aims to provide up-to-date information and materials to different stakeholders to facilitate an effective response to HIV/AIDS.

The new website www.unaids.org.in aims to be an information and knowledge reference point for the Expanded Theme Group on HIV/AIDS. The Theme Group includes apart from UN agencies, the Government of India, bilateral donors, network of people living with HIV/AIDS and foundations.

Among other things on the website, one can find the latest estimates of the HIV epidemic in India, information about how HIV spreads, documents published by UNAIDS India, links to partners in the response to HIV/AIDS in India and information about upcoming events. The site is a storehouse for those seeking India-specific information on the epidemic.

The launch of the website was announced at the ‘India Evening’ held at the Bangkok Conference today. Chaired by Dr. Suman Mehta, Associate Director, Asia Pacific and the Middle East Division, UNAIDS, the event focused on India’s response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Speakers included Dr. Kenneth Wind-Andersen, Country Coordinator, UNAIDS India; Ms. Meenakshi Datta Ghosh, Project Director, NACO; Mr Manoj Pardesi, Indian Network of Positive People and Mr. Suresh Shetty, Health Minister, Maharashtra.

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, UNAIDS, is the leading advocate for global action on the epidemic. The global mission of UNAIDS is to strengthen and support an expanded response to the epidemic that aims at preventing transmission of HIV, providing care and support, reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV/AIDS, and alleviating the impact of the epidemic.
