Check that Thanksgiving ham and turkey

In the latest food scare in the United States thousands of pounds of ham and turkey have been recalled because they are suspected of contamination with listeria.

An Ohio based food processor and distributor, HoneyBaked Foods based in Toledo, has recalled 46,941 pounds of cooked ham and turkey which was sold during the Thanksgiving holiday period.

The company says that both the ham and turkey could possibly contain Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause fevers, nausea, headaches and diarrhea.

Although Listeria usually does not affect healthy people, it is a potentially fatal disease for the elderly and the very young or people with HIV or cancer.

It can also cause miscarriages.

To date no cases have been reported and the company has issued the voluntary recall as a precaution.

The company says the ham and turkey which includes cooked, glazed and sliced ham and turkey, was sold between September 5th and November 13th in kiosks in the Toledo area, online and through the company catalogue.

The products have the following label codes: Ham codes include 6261 through 6310 and Sliced and Glazed Turkey Breast Codes include 6248 through 6258.
