American Nurses Association stands with Obama in calling for healthcare reform now

American Nurses Association (ANA) members joined President Obama today at a White House press conference, sending a strong message to Congress that the country no longer can wait to reform health care as rising costs threaten the financial stability of families and their ability to access health care services.

In citing significant progress this week on health reform proposals in both the House and Senate and his pledge to "get this done," the president referred to the nation's 2.9 million nurses as a group that knows what must be done and how to get things moving in the right direction -- whether it's with their patients or policymakers who need a nudge.

ANA has long advocated for reforms that would result in guaranteed, affordable, high-quality health care for all, and views the recent progress on Capitol Hill as steps toward that goal. Along with President Obama, ANA believes that health reform legislation should include a public health insurance plan option to provide broader choice for patients, increase affordability, foster marketplace competition and ensure access to services.

"As a nation, we cannot continue in good conscience to allow families to go bankrupt or people to suffer with health problems unnecessarily because they can't afford treatment, are denied health care, and lack basic coverage or private insurance," said ANA President Rebecca M. Patton, MSN, RN, CNOR, who appeared with President Obama. "Along with private insurance market reforms, the choice of a public health insurance plan option would provide millions of individuals and families what they want most -- access to affordable health care when they need it."

President Obama invited registered nurses -- rated as the nation's most trusted profession for seven consecutive years in Gallup's annual survey of professions -- to the Rose Garden to bolster his case for swift action on health reform.

"Nurses aren't in health care to get rich; they're in it to care for us from the time they bring new life into this world to the moment they ease the pain of those who pass from it. If it weren't for nurses, many Americans in underserved and rural areas would have no access to health care at all. And that's why it's safe to say few understand why we have to pass reform as intimately as our nation's nurses. They see firsthand the heartbreaking cost of our health care crisis. They hear the same stories I've heard across this country -- of treatment deferred or coverage denied by insurance companies; of insurance premiums and prescriptions that are so expensive they consume a family's entire budget ... And they understand that this is a problem that we can no longer defer," President Obama said.

ANA encourages its members to contact their representatives in Congress to urge action on health care reform this year and support for the public health insurance plan option.

These nurses actually agree with HR 676, re: medicare,  starting on pages 425. What about page 430?

What did we educate, a bunch of Nurse Ratchets?

Guess the best way to control health care cost and burgeoning social security, is Kill The Seniors Bill.

I am disappointed in the ANA's support of this health care bill created by congress. I see in no way, how this health care bill is really going to create the change we as nurses know this health care industry needs. Not to mention the trillion dollar price tag. I know we can do better than this.

Who are these nurses in the ANA that agree with this bill? There is no way that this bill is the answer to our health care problems. I feel like I have been stabbed in the back by one of my own kind. I am a 3rd generation RN. I am proud of my career choice and it is an honor to take care of the sick.  But, President Obama you are sadly mistaken if you think I will do this job for any less money. I put my health and that of my family at risk every day from exposure to disease. I work weekends, I work holidays, I work days, I work nights. I am obligated to come to work even in the event of a disaster when the rest of the world is evacuating. Do not insult me by assuming I dont expect to be financially compensated accordingly for my efforts. We have the financial resources in the country to take care of the citizens OF THIS country. How much money do we spend on providing excellent health care to people who are in this country illegally? People who dont even pay taxes in this country! How about we work on providing Americas own citizens with health care first. When we get that taken care of, then we can worry about the rest of the world.

Just because the president or board of an organization "stands" with the President...doesn't mean the working members do!!! I have heard that doctors are leaving the AMA because their President "stood" with The President...and you can too!!  This bill will hurt many more Americans than it will help!!And...yes, we need to take care of Americans first. Not illegal people.  Also, we shouldn't have to pay for prescription medicines at such an exorbitant rate, when NO OTHER COUNTRY in the world has to do so.  It would be cheaper to cover those who are not covered, and change some things about insurance coverage than to have a government takeover of health.  They've messed up Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and Welfare.  Do you REALLY think they can do this too?  I know an RN who left the VA because she saw that they treated those patients horribly....she couldn't stand to see it.  Well, if we get Obamacare, that is how it will be!  I say NO!

I don't believe that nurses are supporting this bill as a unified group. I would love for nurses to stand up for what is right and good in this country. Unified we could change the climate in Washington. Fire the ANA President! Read the bill. Talk to each other. Raise the roof, it is not right!!!
