Preservation of amniotic fluid stem cells is an innovative technology that recently became available to expecting mothers in the United States with Biocell Center having launched its pioneering service here following its success in Europe. Today, the company announced its collaboration with Innovative Medical Solutions of Valley Stream, NY, a company that offers medical products and solutions to hospitals and the Ob/Gyn marketplace.
Innovative Medical Solutions will work with hospitals and private Ob/Gyn clinics to present to their patients an option to preserve amniotic fluid stem cells collected during routine second trimester amniocentesis. "With its highly successful track record in Europe, Biocell Center presents a great opportunity to collaborate and to bring cutting-edge technology to the U.S. and to the New York area," said John D'Angelis, President and CEO of Innovative Medical Solutions.
Preservation of amniotic fluid stem cells is offered exclusively to pregnant women who, after consulting their doctor, choose amniocentesis for diagnostic reasons. The sample can be collected during amniocentesis without any change to the standard procedure. "Amniotic fluid contains young, multi-potent stem cells and represents a potential biological insurance for your child's future," said Dr. Robert E. Wassman, MD, FACMG, and former Vice President and National Medical Director, Genzyme Genetics.
The service costs $1,650 for the first year, then $120 for each year of banking after that, and the samples can be shipped nationwide to Biocell Center's facility in Massachusetts.
