James Cook University's (JCU) Papua New Guinea and Pacific Research Forum from the Pacific Island Nations will be discussing the issues affecting the region at Cairns in far north Queensland today. Academics as well as policy makers are likely to convene at the forum.
JCU spokesman Dr Allan Hauquitz said he would be speaking of his research into HIV-AIDS prevention in PNG. He said, “HIV is of interest and concern to many people around the world and within our region… Papua New Guinea has unfortunately the worst situation when it comes to prevalence of HIV.”
Australian state of Queensland's new special trade representative to Papua New Guinea, Jeremy Blockey has assured hundreds of millions of dollars to the value of trade with PNG over the next few years.
Treasurer Andrew Fraser said the trade representative’s job is particularly aimed at boosting trade between far north Queensland and PNG. Mr Blockey's is president of the Cairns Chamber of Commerce and director of Advance Cairns, as well as the principal of the Cairns-based, Blockey Consulting. He says he sees a bright future for Queensland-PNG relations.
