Craig Young, MD, was awarded the 2012 Founders Award at the 21th Annual Meeting of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, in Atlanta on April 24, 2012. The award is not given annually, but is bestowed when AMSSM leadership determines that someone exemplifies the best that a sports medicine physician can be and do.
Dr. Young is a professor at the departments of orthopedic surgery and community and family medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisc., and team physician for the Milwaukee Brewers. He served as the 2007-08 AMSSM President and currently serves on the AMSSM Foundation Board.
"He has consistently been recognized for his excellence in clinical care and as an educator," said 2011-12 President Dr. Cindy Chang.
Dr. Young is a passion supporter of nurturing young physicians in the sports medicine community. The AMSSM student membership category is named in his honor.
"Whether it is a young and enthusiastic sports medicine fellow or a medical student who ends up practicing ophthalmology, this could only elevate the profile of primary care sports medicine to the level of every other specialty and beyond," said Dr. Young.
