TEDMED conference speaker highlights key actions to stop pandemics

"Some 2,000 health professionals and thought leaders from all sectors of society are attending TEDMED at the Kennedy Center [in Washington, D.C.,] this week for a series of talks [focusing on medical technology and health care], which are also being televised in more than 80 countries," CNN reports. The news service profiles Larry Brilliant, president of the Skoll Global Threats Fund, who spoke on Thursday at the conference and "made the case that several key actions will stop pandemics: early detection, early response and better cooperation among governments." Previously, as executive director of Google.org, Brilliant "helped develop a search system to try and beat the timeline of the official flu outbreak reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention," CNN notes and describes several other disease tracking sites and networks (Etheridge, 4/18).
