The National Association For Continence (NAFC) has updated the Male Stress Urinary Incontinence content at www.nafc.org. The new content is designed to be more patient friendly and includes an educational video, as well as additional resources about the diagnosis, treatment, and management of Male Stress Urinary Incontinence. An improved pamphlet, Male Stress Urinary Incontinence: Understanding its causes and Evaluating Treatment Options was produced to further supplement the online content. This information is the latest addition to NAFC's vast collection of educational web based and print materials available to consumers seeking knowledge of management and treatment options for bladder and bowel health conditions
Male Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) also known as, Post-Prostatectomy Incontinence, commonly occurs following a surgical procedure to remove a cancerous prostate. Studies have indicated that as many as 90% of men report leakage in the first few weeks following surgery, after removal of the catheter. Over the course of the first year, SUI can continue to be a significant problem. Fortunately, there are effective treatment options for many cases of post-prostatectomy incontinence.
Developed by NAFC, with clinical reviewers Brian Christine, MD and Donna Deng, MD, the new Male SUI web section is the newest information available for patients. Dr. Donna Deng, Chairman of the NAFC Board and Associate Professor of Urology at University of California, San Francisco, believes, "Men often say the leakage from post-prostatectomy incontinence is worse than the actual cancer. There is an unfortunate lack of information for men with stress urinary incontinence. This new content will hopefully get men talking to their healthcare providers about possible treatment options." NAFC encourages patients and caregivers to visit this updated web section for educational guidance to enhance their knowledge regarding their need to best manage this health problem.
The updated male stress urinary incontinence pamphlet is available for purchase via NAFC's website. Bulk orders for healthcare professional are available at a discount price. The Male Stress Urinary Incontinence web section, pamphlet and supportive education are provided by a sponsorship from Coloplast — a global medical device company developing surgical products that make life easier for people suffering from intimate urological disorders such as urinary incontinence.
