Gastroparesis subtypes have been discovered recently based upon the quality of the 3 cycle per minute signal seen during a simple test of stomach electrical activity called an electrogastrogram or EGG. Up to 40-4r% of people with reflux have gastroparesis that is due to the reflux and will be cured by correcting the reflux. 25% of those with gastroparesis have a condition known as functional outlet obstruction that is curable with a simple endoscopic balloon dilation. Finally the quality of the 3cpm signal tells us about the quality of the conduction system and is allowing devices like gastric pacemakers to be used with increased success rates due to better selection based upon the EGG results. So while gastroparesis can be severe, for many a cure is possible today.
