Loyola University Health System to celebrate Nurses Week in May

Loyola University Health System will celebrate Nurses Week May 5-10. This event takes place each year just prior to May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. The theme for the week is "Caring Comes Naturally."

"This week recognizes nurses for their innate ability to help patients through various means, whether it be through research, education or clinical care," said Paula Hindle, MSN, MBA, RN, vice president, Health Care Services, and chief nurse executive, LUHS. "Nurses Week provides us with an opportunity to express our gratitude for this dedication."

Loyola will honor its nurses with a special lunch, rounds from senior administrators and its long-standing tradition of blessing of the hands. Nurses also will be recognized at special Masses held at noon each day during the week, in Loyola University Medical Center's Paul V. Galvin Memorial Chapel. Chaplains will anoint nurses' hands with oil and bless them for continuing to use their hands as instruments of service.

Loyola nurses will have an opportunity to exercise and receive complimentary chair massages from the Loyola Center for Fitness throughout the week.

A Nursing Excellence Awards Ceremony will honor top Loyola nurses later in the week. The event will take place 4:30-5:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 8, in Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine (SSOM) Tobin Hall. The awards ceremony also will recognize nurses who have achieved clinical ladder levels three and four, demonstrating professional growth and development. A reception will follow.
