New research published in the Journal of Wound Ostomy and Continence Nursing (JWOCN) into the use of static air support surfaces for the prevention of pressure injuries has provided further evidence to support their use as an effective method for reducing pressure injury.
A recent multicenter, cohort study, conducted across six Belgian nursing homes by Professor Dimitri Beeckman and Brecht Serraes, investigated the incidence of pressure injury and associated risk factors when using a Repose® static mattress overlay, seat cushion or a heel wedge from Welsh manufacturer, Frontier Medical Group.
The full study outlines their methods and analysis, but in their conclusion, Beeckman and Serras summarised that in the 176 residents who met the study inclusion criteria (such as being bed or chair bound and over 65 years of age), there was a much lower incidence of pressure injuries in those patients using the static air overlay products. No significant risk factors for category II – IV pressure injuries could also be identified. They recommend that static air support surfaces should be considered for prevention of pressure injury in anyone deemed at risk.
Simon Jackson, Managing Director at Frontier Medical Group said:
This study is a really in-depth and insightful piece of research, and it reinforces the data that we have collected over the last 19 years in other clinical trials for our Repose® range.
“Pressure injuries are now a significant concern as an estimated 700,000 people of all ages are affected by pressure ulcers in the UK alone each year. To have this sort of independent research that highlights an effective form of prevention is invaluable. We’re proud that our products were chosen to be a part of it and look forward to continuing to work with Professor Beeckman and his team.
The research coincides with the announcement that Frontier Medical Group is extending the warranty on their Repose® range from 12 to 24 months and increasing the weight limit of the Repose® mattress overlay to 222Kg.
