To find the causes for cancer, biochemists and developmental biologists at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, retraced the function of an important human cancer gene 600 million years back in time. For the first time, they have identified the oncogene myc in a fresh water polyp and they have shown that this oncogene has similar biochemical functions in ancestral metazoan and in humans.

DMC recommends Gamida-Teva JV to continue enrollment in StemEx Phase III trial for leukemia and lymphoma

Elbit Imaging Ltd. announces that its associated company (approximately 28% holding on a fully diluted basis), Gamida Cell Ltd. ("Gamida Cell") through the Gamida-Teva Joint Venture (JV), announced today that the Data Monitoring Committee ("DMC") has independently reviewed preliminary data from the pivotal registration, Phase III clinical trial of StemEx (called ExCell) and has recommended that the JV continue to enroll patients in this study.

Bioactive lipid LPA mediates fibrogenesis in bleomycin mouse model of scleroderma

Amira Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that their collaborators, Andrew Tager, M.D. and Flavia V. Castelino, M.D. of Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, will present a preclinical proof-of-concept study which demonstrates that the bioactive lipid lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), through its high affinity LPA1 receptor, is an important mediator of fibrogenesis in the bleomycin mouse model of scleroderma. Data will be presented as part of a poster session for the 1st Systemic Sclerosis World Congress to be held in Florence, Italy, February 11 to 13, 2010.

The Catalysis Foundation for Health (Catalysis), a 501 (c) (3) non-profit entity dedicated to developing sustainable diagnostics for the developing world, announced today that it has received a $5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Mapping of all fragile sites of yeast S.cerevisiae may lead to better understanding of cancer development

The research group of Dr. Fran-ois Robert, a researcher at the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montr-al (IRCM), in collaboration with the team of Dr. Daniel Durocher (Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute and University of Toronto) accomplished a technical breakthrough: they mapped all the fragile sites of a living organism, the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The method used by the researchers can be applied to humans. This study has been published online today in the scientific journal Nature Structural and Molecular Biology.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is the causal agent of chronic gastritis, ulcer and gastric cancer.
