The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT), the second largest funding source of cancer research in the United States, kicks off its second year by awarding 52 cancer research grants totaling $40,302,026 to 13 Texas institutions. Among the grants are two CPRIT Scholars in Cancer Research recruitment awards bringing outstanding scientists from preeminent institutions to join the faculty at Texas universities.
“The excellent projects selected today will advance our knowledge of the causes, prevention and treatment of cancer while contributing to Texas' research superiority and economic development”
The grants awarded today are the first of $216 million expected to be awarded by CPRIT in 2011 to support groundbreaking cancer research, drug development, and evidence-based cancer screening efforts in Texas.
"Texas is leading the nation in its commitment to the war on cancer," said CPRIT Executive Director Bill Gimson. Since 2010, CPRIT has awarded more than $250 million to 46 academic institutions, community organizations and private companies in Texas. Together with matching funds obligated by grant recipients, more than $350 million has been invested in Texas' extraordinary endeavor to change the face of cancer.
"The excellent projects selected today will advance our knowledge of the causes, prevention and treatment of cancer while contributing to Texas' research superiority and economic development," said CPRIT's Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Al Gilman.
