GTSI Corp. (NASDAQ: GTSI), a leading information technology systems integrator for federal, state and local governments, announced today the award of the Biometric Automated Toolset-Army (BAT-A) contract by the U.S. Army. This contract will provide war fighters mobile biometric devices to assist in real-time identification of persons of interest in the field. The contract has a total value of $159 million. The award covers a 16-month period and will be executed as part of GTSI's Information Technology Enterprise Solutions – 2 Hardware (ITES-2H) contract with the federal government.
Biometrics are measurable physical characteristics such as fingerprints, iris scans, facial recognition, hand geometry, palm prints, handwriting, voice, and DNA. DoD biometric systems capture, transmit, store, share, retrieve, exploit and display biometric data for timely identification and verification. These systems are mission enablers for force protection, intelligence, physical and logical access control, as well as identity management and credentialing, law enforcement, and interception operations. GTSI partnered with Cross Match Technologies, Inc., a leading manufacturer of biometric solutions, to deliver a portable solution that provides a rugged platform capable of capturing multiple biometric modalities in the field.
BAT-A includes an enrollment kit consisting of a laptop and attached biometric collection devices capable of enrollment, verification, and identity detection, together with mobile handheld devices for collecting, storing, and uploading pertinent data to U.S. Army biometrics collection centers. A system of servers containing the biometric database maintains and synchronizes information, ensuring that data collected at one location is available at others.
"We are delighted to win BAT-A and this contract positions GTSI as a leader in mobility and biometrics integration and support for our war fighters," said Sterling Phillips, CEO of GTSI. "GTSI is committed to delivering best-in-class technology solutions that serve the Army's mission-critical needs."
