Retention Test for Lancet Needles

Specification

Owen Mumford, a UK based medical design company, develop and manufacture a variety of blood glucose control and monitoring devices used by consumers and healthcare professionals worldwide.

Owen Mumford produce a range of single-use lancets, for diabetes patients to draw capillary blood samples while mounted into a lancing device. The design of the lancet consists of a molded plastic base with a steel needle attached on top and a cap covering the sharp end, which twists off.

To verify that the needle will not become dislodged from the base when the cap is unfastened before use, strict manufacturing specifications put in place by Owen Mumford, prescribe the minimum allowable retention force of the needle in the plastic cap.

Solution

A Mecmesin AFG 500 force gauge mounted on a force test stand (such as a MultiTest dV) is used by Owen Mumford to complete the lancet needle retention tests, at 6 hourly regular intervals. This ensures a consistent quality in the manufactured product.

The plastic base is positioned below a custom-engineered mounting block, with the vertically aligned tip of the needle uncovered. A lever-operated pin vice is fitted to the end of the needle, and a tensile load is applied to the top at a rate of 200 mm/min until the needle is dislodged. For 8 years this durable system from Mecmesin has been in constant use.

  • Custom-engineered mounting block (lower fixture)
  • Lever-Operated Pin Vice
  • UltraTest Stand (Superseded by the MultiTest-dV motorised force stand)
  • AFG 500 Force Gauge

Testimonial

We have been using Mecmesin equipment to perform retention tests on our range of lancet needles for over 8 years. We find the system easy to use for regular in-process checks, and generally reliable with prompt servicing from Mecmesin when required.”

About Mecmesin

Established in 1977, Mecmesin is a global brand renowned worldwide for delivering reliable, affordable and innovative force, materials, and torque testing equipment for quality control.

Mecmesin is part of the Physical Properties Testers Group (PPT Group), a multi-national group of brands expert in the design and production of solutions for testing a range of physical properties including compression, light fastness, moisture, dry rate, water repellency, abrasion, flammability, texture, tensile and torque properties.

The PPT Group has regional offices in the UK, France, Germany, the USA, Thailand and China.  The Mecmesin brand is also supported by a global network of distributors in more than 50 countries able to provide technical expertise and after-sales support to customers locally.

The focus of the brand has always been to provide high-quality test solutions, which are an affordable alternative to the many higher-priced systems available, enabling small and large businesses alike to undertake quality control checks on their products without compromising on precision and accuracy.

The rugged design of these systems means they can withstand tough factory conditions and perform tests at the point of production rather than having to use expensive laboratories to ensure consistent manufacture.
