When the pipetting process is over, users must remember that their pipette is a precision instrument. That means they must not simply throw it back onto the bench or lock it away in a drawer. Ideally, the pipette should be stored upright, such as hanging on a stand, ensuring no contaminants infiltrate the pipette.
Routine cleaning is also recommended to ensure that the pipette maintains optimal functioning. After use, the pipette should be wiped down with ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, or another decontaminating agent.
The pipette’s calibration is also essential. Since the pipette is a precision tool, its performance should be verified if it is dropped or placed down too hard. While there is no rule about how often a pipette should be calibrated, once a year is usually enough for most labs. If accuracy and precision are important, however, then the pipette should be calibrated more frequently.
