While some pipettes have fixed volumes, most have a volume range that the pipette can handle. Consequently, the volume range of a pipette can significantly impact accuracy and precision.
Essentially, the closer the dispense volume is to the total volume of the pipette, the better the results will be. For example, if accuracy and precision are important, users should not use a 100 μl pipette for 10 μl dispenses.
Users should ideally work with 35-100 % of the total volume of a pipette. Below 35 %, the volume of dead air in the pipette becomes too large, and the risk of inaccurate and imprecise dispensing increases. If pipetting results are of no concern, it is acceptable to pipette the entire range of the pipette's volume. However, it is recommended that pipettes are as close to the target volume as possible to ensure accuracy and precision.
