Chronic inflammation usually involves an imbalance of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Prolonged disruptions in this balance result in the development of diseases such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid, autoimmune disorders, inflammatory bowel diseases, and cancer, emphasizing the need to decipher the mechanisms and intercalated network of cytokines involved in chronic inflammation.

Disturbance in levels of the key pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α, and anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-10, IL-4, and TGF-β, are mainly responsible for the development of chronic inflammation.
A number of these inflammatory mediators, such as IL-10, IL-6, TGF-β, and TNF-α, have been proven to participate in chronic inflammatory-associated tumor progression. The presence of high levels of the C-reactive protein (CRP) is one of the blood tests used to identify systemic inflammation.
Currently, cytokine therapies are used in chronic inflammatory disorder treatments but are not widely applicable. Studies are being carried out to find new and improved treatments to overcome this challenge.
