The Urine microRNA Purification Kit for Norgen allows for the fast and phenol-free purification of microRNA from urine samples.

Features and benefits

  • Bind and elute all RNA, irrespective of size or GC content, without bias
  • Isolate high-quality total RNA (including small RNA and microRNA) and all sizes of circulating and exosomal RNA, including microRNA from urine and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples
  • No phenol extractions
  • Purification is based on spin column chromatography that uses Norgen’s proprietary resin separation matrix
  • Rapid and convenient spin column protocol
  • Small urine and CSF input ranging from as low as 0.5 mL to 1 mL

The Urine microRNA Purification Kit from Norgen offers a quick way to separate and purify small RNA molecules (any size, including less than 200 nt) from urine samples. These small RNAs include tRNA, 5S rRNA, and regulatory RNA molecules like microRNA (miRNA).

Small RNA molecules are commonly studied for their role in regulating gene expression. miRNAs, which are usually 20–25 nucleotides long, bind to mRNA molecules and alter their translation or stability to control gene expression.

Recent research has demonstrated that miRNA controls both cell division and apoptosis. Moreover, experimental and clinical analyses indicated that miRNAs might be a new class of tumor suppressor or oncogene genes.

Furthermore, clinical and experimental studies suggest that miRNAs may act as a distinct class of oncogenes or tumor suppressor genes. Recent findings show that microRNA expression profiles in various tumor types—compared to their corresponding normal tissues—can reveal phenotypic signatures specific to certain cancers. These unique patterns of aberrant miRNA expression hold potential as molecular biomarkers for tumor diagnosis, predicting disease-specific outcomes, and guiding therapeutic response strategies.

Isolation and Detection of microRNA from Urine Samples. Norgen

Figure 1. Isolation and Detection of microRNA from Urine Samples. Norgen's Urine microRNA Purification Kit was used to isolate microRNA from 8 different 1.5 mL urine samples. The purified microRNA was then used as the template in an RT-qPCR reaction to detect the human miR-21 gene. Five microlitres of the isolated RNA were used as the template in the RT step, and 5 µL from the RT step was used in the qPCR reaction. As it can be seen, the qPCR was able to successfully detect and amplify the miR-21 gene in all cases, indicating the high quality of the isolated urine microRNA. The black line in the graph above corresponds to the No Template Control. Image Credit: Norgen Biotek Corporation
