DNA from samples taken with a swab, such as nasal, buccal, saliva, fecal, skin, surfaces, etc., can be collected, stored, and transported using Norgen's Swab Collection and DNA Preservation System. Norgen's Swab Preservative is a liquid that is part of the Swab Collection and DNA Preservation System.

Using the supplied swab, the user merely gathers the specimen and dips it into the Swab Preservative. The resulting non-infectious samples can be handled and transported safely because the Swab Preservative inactivates viruses and stops Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi growth.

Using the Swab Preservative, samples can be sent to centralized testing facilities at room temperature, eliminating the need to process or freeze them right away. The ingredients in the Swab Preservative can keep DNA samples at room temperature for more than two years.

DNA isolation from preservative

Swab samples collected and preserved with Norgen’s Swab Collection and DNA Preservation System are broadly compatible with various DNA isolation techniques. These samples have successfully used numerous Norgen Biotek DNA isolation kits and reagents. For optimal results, an optimized isolation protocol is included in Norgen’s Microbiome DNA Isolation Kit.

Saliva samples from multiple donors were mixed and preserved with Norgen’s Swab DNA Preservative, then stored at room temperature for up to 75 months. DNA was isolated at various intervals using Norgen’s Saliva DNA Isolation Kit. Agarose gel electrophoresis showed no signs of DNA degradation after 75 months of room-temperature storage.
