Host cell proteins, or HCPs for short, are impurities that are introduced while producing cell-based biotherapeutics, such as recombinant antibodies and proteins.
Surplus amounts of residual HCPs may considerably affect the efficacy and safety of the product in various ways. Most significantly, HCP is known to trigger an undesirable immune response against the medication. Reagents and assays are in great demand for the detection and measurement of HCPs.
Chinese Hamster Ovarian (CHO) cell is a host organism that is often used for producing recombinant bio-therapeutic products. Several types of HCPs are naturally expressed by CHO cells, and most of these HCPs can be effortlessly cleaned at the time of the purification process. However, it can be difficult to remove a few HCPs, specifically the lipases.
