Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine primarily produced by activated macrophages, as well as neutrophils, epithelial cells, and endothelial cells. It plays a central role in immune regulation and exhibits metabolic, physiological, and hematopoietic activities.
IL-1β and IL-1α bind to the same receptor and share similar, though not identical, biological properties. The mature human IL-1β shares 96 % amino acid sequence identity with rhesus IL-1β and 67 %–78 % identity with its canine, mouse, and rat counterparts.
