Transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFB1), also known as TGF-β1, CED, DPD1, and TGFB, is a polypeptide member of the transforming growth factor beta superfamily of cytokines. It is a secreted protein with diverse cellular functions, including regulating cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, motility, and apoptosis.
TGFB1 is present throughout the body and is crucial in prenatal development, blood vessel formation, muscle tissue regulation, fat development, wound healing, and immune system function. It is particularly abundant in skeletal tissues, where it helps regulate bone growth, and in the extracellular matrix, which provides structural support between cells. Within cells, TGFB1 remains inactive until it receives a chemical signal to become active.
TGFB1 plays a key regulatory role in the immune system, exhibiting different effects depending on the cell type or developmental stage. Most immune cells (leukocytes) secrete TGFB1, influencing immune responses and maintaining tissue homeostasis. TGFB1 also interacts with several proteins, including TGF beta receptor 1, LTBP1, YWHAE, EIF3I, and Decorin, further contributing to its broad biological functions.
